He was ready to agree when he had meetings with US representatives who told him they would guarentee his security and because of that Putin would not take military action. He took the US guarantee and that immediately trggered the Special Military Action which Russia intended as a show of their commitment to Ukraine being neutral.

Since that time the US and its allies have poured billions of dollars in armaments into Ukraine, urging Zelenskyy to continue and caused the fighting to escalate out of control, Zelenskyy immediately got rid of and suppressed his political opposition and declared marshal law forbidding anyone of fighting age (18-60) from leaving the country, mostly that impacted men but many females where caught in the trap as well. Ukraine is running out of human resources, so much so that it is perhaps the major reason the long touted Spring Counter Offensive has been delayed, every able body soldier is required and some are still training and not available, there are no reserves. If the counter offensive does get underway it will be a significant last throw of the dice for Ukraine.

Many will say Ukraine is fighting for its very existence, Russia eyes the Wests motives and believes the same thing, this is not Ukraine against the much larger Russia, this is Ukraine and 51 other nations including NATO, the EU, and allies against Russia, and several military analysts believe Russia has the upper hand, which is why so many Western red lines on supplying more lethal hardware are being crossed. It is only Ukrainian lives on the chopping block but it is US and NATO pride, that's a far more serious and important matter and why Ukrainians and Russians will keep dying.

Many dismiss the nuclear threat, but if Russia is backed into a really dark corner what else have they got, even if they surrendered tomorrow, which is just fantasy, the punishment from the west would continue so if they are going to be obliterated they might well choose to take a few enemies with them.

To quote Tom Lehrer :

We will all fry together when we fry
We’ll be French fried potatoes by and by
There will be no more misery
When the world is our rotisserie
Yes, we’ll all fry together when we fry !

I wouldn’t dismiss anything threatened by Putin ! As you imply at the end of your post , he is capable of anything if he feels he feels he has nothing left to lose.

True .
Losing is not an option for Putin .
However in the eyes of the world, Putin has already lost.

The following is a talk given by Colonel and former Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell Lawrence Wilkerson on the current state of affairs in Ukraine, it is a few months old but is more relevant today than ever and may give some a better insight into background aspects of the conflict. It is long but interesting.

Did I just recently hear Wagner's boss, Putin's self acclaimed butcher and not just cook anymore, just polished his crystal ball and saw another Russian Revolution if ... ... lots of if's.

Nice to see the anti missile patriot US defense system working much better in Ukraine than expected, especially against the deadly toted new Russian super sonic missiles. Many Military eyebrows were raised at that.

My Australia is upping its production of our Bush Master ATVs to give scores and scores to Ukraine asap, and more no doubt. We support Ukraine from almost all our political perspectives.

Meanwhile, China's eleven Xi takes notes.

It would be interesting to see what form such a revolution would take and if the Ukraine and other countries would press in on Russian territorial claims.

Wagner chief warns Russians could revolt if invasion continues to struggle
A new “revolution” could rock Russia if its stuttering war effort in Ukraine continues, the chief of private military group Wagner has said, in a scathing assessment of Moscow’s military readiness that could further expose divisions in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s military hierarchy.

Yevgeny Prigozhin said in an interview with Konstantin Dolgov, a pro-Russian blogger, that Moscow’s troops are unprepared to resist forces loyal to Kyiv even when they enter Russian territory.

He also praised the capabilities of the Ukrainian army, and urged Moscow to escalate its war effort if it wants to avoid a long and costly conflict.

“I believe Ukrainians today are one of the strongest armies in the world,” Prigozhin said. He called Kyiv’s forces “highly organized, highly trained and their intelligence is on the highest level, they can operate any military system with equal success, a Soviet or a NATO one.”

Well said Shadowman,

it's a bit of a dog's dinner and another Russian Revolution could well be on its way, for different reasons of course.

Hard times indeed especially seeing Yevgeny Prigozhin, Wagner's boss, losing favour and whining too much.

Very interesting.

Putin extraordinary weakness

Add to fact that Russia’s May Day parade was laughable..
just the one tank a WW11 tank, there were other vehicles trucks , it showed huge losses in military equipment and casualties Russia has sustained.

I see from the latest news that there has now been a drone attack on Moscow, and Putin is accusing the Ukrainians of a terrorist attack .

Video on here of the drone that hit Moscow.

Moscow drone attack: What we know about the strikes.......9 hours ago
Russia says Ukraine has launched "a terrorist drone attack" on Moscow, with several buildings damaged.

It is the first time Moscow has been so heavily targeted in a single operation, but Ukraine denies carrying out the strikes.
What was hit by the drones?

The Russian military says eight drones were used in the strikes.

It says five were shot down and three stopped with signal jamming technology - causing them to lose control and miss their targets.
Strike sites in Moscow
By piecing together visual clues in video footage - such as building exteriors and parks - BBC Verify has confirmed the location of three drone strikes in south-west Moscow:

A residential building hit on the outskirts of Moscow
A high-rise apartment block, where a drone reportedly flew into an apartment on the 13th floor
Another high-rise building, reportedly hit earlier this morning

We have also verified footage on the western outskirts of Moscow. It shows an unidentified drone flying over roofs in a village where affluent Muscovites live.

"We don't know what they were targeting yet, a proportion were intercepted by air defence systems, but some struck targets," Jack Watling, an expert on land warfare, told BBC Radio 4's Today Programme.

Russia said it shot down five of the drones in the Moscow region with the Pantsir-S surface-to-air missile system. This system appeared to have been installed in central Moscow earlier this year.

What type of drones were used?
There was initial online speculation that the Ukrainian-manufactured UJ-22 drone had been used.

However, we know the UJ-22 was not the drone pictured in several videos we checked. These drones have a different wing, wheel position and fuselage design.

Instead, the drone pictured has a short set of wings at the front and larger ones to the rear. The unconventional design has prompted some to wrongly conclude that the aircraft was flying backwards, or that the footage was reversed.

A video we've verified shows a drone flying above Moscow

We showed this video and images of the debris to drone specialist Steve Wright, of the University of the West of England, who said the wing span suggests a potential range of "at least tens, even hundreds, of kilometres."

"However, as with the Kremlin attack on 3 May, I expect that it was launched much closer than that for tactical reasons," Mr Wright added.

Elsewhere, a commercial plane flying over Moscow - a Cessna 172 - has been wrongly identified as a drone on the Telegram social messaging platform, popular in Russia.

Throughout the war, both Russia and Ukraine have used commercially-sourced drones as well as established military designs.

BBC Verify is working to identify the exact type of drones used in these reported attacks.

How many times has Russia been targeted?

Since the start of 2023, the BBC has tracked over 60 suspected drone attacks inside Russia and Russian-controlled territory in Ukraine.

This includes an alleged attack on the Kremlin Senate building in central Moscow.

However, most of the suspected strikes have focussed on the Bryansk and Belgorod regions in Russia near the north-eastern border, as well as in Crimea.

Oil facilities, airfields and energy infrastructure have all been targeted.

Layla Guest, an analyst at Sibylline security consultancy, says: "Ukrainian forces will highly likely prioritise targeting oil refineries, as well as railway infrastructure and wider Russian logistics, to cause maximum disruption as part of their strategy ahead of the impending counter-offensive."
