Fetching the Sunday papers along with 10 cigarettes for my Dad, can you imagine serving a 10 year old
with a packet of cigarettes these days.

oh that was awful!! Getting the smokes! I weeded, raked the leaves, dusted, and had to clean my younger sister's room (so unfair!)

Definitely grocery errands, indeed even cigarettes for my dad from the machine outside sweet shop… it does sound awful but was acceptable way back when !

I would get half a crown pocket money 12.5p

I was allowed to keep the change from the papers and cigarettes,
must have been a few pence, which I then spent on sweets.

never smoked here but also never heard of a 10 pak 5 yes not a 10.

I had two main jobs as a child of about 8, both revolving around the open fire in the living room that was our only source of heat for the house.

One was to chop up blocks of wood my Dad had pinched from work into sticks so that they could be put on the fire on top of newspaper to get the coal alight. Could you imagine letting an 8 year old child loose with a razor sharp hatchet nowadays?

The other was after the coal man had tipped our coal down the cellar via a grate in the street I had to break the coal into manageable sized pieces with a hammer.

After doing two hundredweight of coal I was as black as your hat but it was par for the course and I didn't think much of it at the time.
