All the neighborhood kids played some type of war games. As far as I know it didn’t make anyone violent or aggressive later in life. A different time obviously. Even the 4th of July involved bottle rocket fights. Now I’ll drive through a neighborhood near my property and see kids outside about as often as a blue moon. Weird weird to me.

Growing up we were hardly never inside unless we were sickly, well maybe in the barn. Agree now days we still see a few outside here but not all day long like we were, we were kidded that we looked like our Mexican friends due to the extreme sun tans. Also, an older crowds noticed hauling hay than we were. Paying $1 a bale in the barn stacked! A good team (2) can make over $500 a day cash easy if they work at it like we did.

A very popular game when I was younger, we used to play at the park on the grass and no one ever moaned as we were using a knife as we were trusted back then not to be an idiot.
Did see the odd knife end up in a foot though lol
I only had short legs so I was never the best at it.

If that is you played it the same as us? We used to have two people and one foot had to stay in one place in the first throw and where ever the knife stuck in the floor when thrown by your opponent you had to stretch the other leg to the knife retrieve it and keep your feet there and then have your turn to throw the knife and the loser was the person who couldn't stretch to the knife without moving their foot from the last throw hole.

We played the same game here Bruce, in the Midlands. On the green, with a knife one time from my kitchen as i recall. I was never in the long legs league either and ended up doing the splits on a few occasions lol. No accidents that I can remember or heard of anyway.. Just one of many games we kids played back in the day.

One game we used to play was Crab Apple Cricket. Each year when the Crab Apples started to fall or we just picked them from many trees which were around the park, and we used to use them as the ball in cricket, but no fielder was allowed to move and if the batsman hit a person with an apple or bit of apple that person had to take a bite from one of the apples and then it was their turn to bat. If they caught the apple hurtling towards them the batter was out and the catcher was in.
Crab Apples are disgusting and taste like nothing like an apple they were very sour and made you look like you were biting a lemon.
Many kid retired from that game after two bites of a crab apple and you had to swallow it lol.

The best games were the ones based on TV programme or film ... like Robin Hood etc ... all you needed was imagination ....

We used to play 'Up Helly A', also called 'Captain's only got one eye'. And something we called French Cricket where the bat is held in front of your legs, awkward to play but great fun.
