The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells (was a favorite of mine)
The Time Machine by H.G. Wells
Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne
The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne
From the Earth to the Moon by Jules Verne
The Lost World by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

The Pit and the Pendulum, & The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allen Poe. I gave up on Poe since his writings were so depressing, then again he was an opium addict, or so they say.

All the classics. I think the first one I had as a gift was A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens.

The Borrowers series left a lasting impact on me; I'm still inclined to push bits and pieces down the kitchen sink drain so the Borrowers can use it up!

I started with comic books, mostly DC (superman, legion of superheroes, batman, Justice league). Then there was the Edgar Rice Burroughs phase, all the Taran books, john Carter of Mars, the Venus series (not well known but I thought better than the Mars books) and Pellucidar, the center of the earth.

After that it was pure science fiction, mostly Robert Heinlein (Stranger in a Strange Land, Moon is a Harsh Mistress, and one of his best, Starship Troopers). That led to the rest of the SF greats; Arthur C Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Andre Norton, C. L. Moore, H. Beam Piper, the Haldeman brothers, Spider Robinson, and on up to the present day with the likes of David Weber. I spent a small fortune on paperbacks and Analog magazine.
