Fun's fun but to hang with hilarity... It was usually said when the "fun" was getting a bit out of hand and would then end up with tears.

Treat people the way you would like to be treated. A great tenet to live by.

My dad: Wakey wakey, rise and shine the sun's burning your eyes out. Usually said on a non school day!
My mum:This won't buy the baby a new dress nor pay the old woman her ninepence. Said to get us to do our chores.
Also my mum on seeing something sparkling clean: It shines like a sh...y stick on a frosty morning.
Also my dad when something happens that he doesn't give 2 hoots about.Pity about that!!

Most of the wise sayings I learned I had to unlearn when I learned to think for myself.

My parents didn’t really use saying, my grandma lived far away. So I came up with a few of my own. When I overheard my daughters judging how immature another school mates behaviors. I would say

What some people learn at 9 yrs old others don’t learn that same lesson until
their 90’s and visa versa.

Or when they argued which seemed often I would say more as a hopeful premonition, when you girls grow up you’re going to be best friends. They get along much better now and as close as good friends.

My favorite I say to my granddaughter, to get her moving out the door. Come on child let roll like a donut hole. Meaning it doesn’t have to be perfect but quit dragging your feet, finish up, and let’s get going!!!!

Fyrefox wrote: My father: "If it's a job worth doing, do it well."

My mother: "You make a better door than a window!" (When I dared to stand however momentarily in front of the TV set)

My mother said that one also, every time we walked in front of the TV when she was watching it.

Mom said many times, "put down that stick before you poke somebody's eye out!"

And I used to think that you could poke someone in the eye with a stick and the eye would roll out of its socket and bounce on the ground!

My grandma used to say "Either poop or get off the pot" when we waffled about anything. I remember thinking it was hilarious.
