Yes....all part of growing up...
Seatbelts weren’t around when I grew up ..our cars simply didn’t have them ...smoking was allowed in restaurants ...
Rusty playgrounds inevitable ,...toy guns part of growing up...cowboys and Indians lol...riding pillion on a motorbike in my youth ...helmets not even thought of...had the odd smack as I grew up...and as my brother aimed the garden hose at me I probably swallowed some as I screamed and laughed...life was fun...

I can relate to most of these survivals. The rusty school playgrounds of my childhood were all anchored in unyielding concrete or asphalt surfaces. Seatbelts were initially available only as a paid option, and for the front seats only; the seat backs were supposed to stop passengers riding in the rear seats in the event of an accident! Toy guns, yes; we played Cowboys and Indians, very politically incorrect today. I can recall teachers admonishing unruly students to "stop behaving like wild Indians!"

Smoking was common, and acceptable anywhere. My parents didn't smoke, but kept ashtrays out for visiting friends who did, so I got my share of carcinogens. I was particularly fascinated by one family friend who could blow smoke rings for my entertainment...

I had strict Asian parents. As an child I thought of them as gods. When I was a teenager I thought the restrictions on my every action was overwhelming. When I had children of my own I realized how right they were. I not only survived their restrictions but am a better person today because of it.
