My Mother-in-law had a text yesterday stating her granddaughter had been the victim of a crime which resulted in her phone cards and cash been stolen, Now the granddaughter needs assistance, they ask for you to ring a number they supply so you can forward funds to the alleged victim.

The Mother-in-law thought Oh dear then realised it said the phone was stolen so she rang her granddaughter's husband who stated No we have no problems, and she is sitting here I will put her on the phone, the granddaughter then confirmed she had her phone next to her and had has nothing stolen.

I am not sure if you ring the number if it costs a fortune or if after you ring it they try and con you in to parting with money to some random account.

Just be aware.

That’s a classic scam. Good for her for calling the granddaughter to verify.

I'd LOVE to get one of those..
I never had kids, ergo..no grandkids..
And I was an only child, so...no nieces/ nephews....

This is a all too common here (Canada). And I know of someone who fell for it. Long story and I'm not sure I have all the facts correct. Instead of phoning her grandson, she took cash out and arranged to meet the scammers.

The moment the scammers said, "Don't phone the police or a lawyer" should have been a clue.

Long story short, she was one of the lucky ones. Her daughter found out and contacted the police and they managed to arrest the scammers.

Scammers like this know how to operate on emotions--fear especially.

So glad your mother-in-law had the sense to check. The woman I know of didn't.

These type of scams are on the increase this year - sometimes, they start by the scammer sending a “phishing” message saying something like “Hi Mum, broke my old phone, can you change my number to this new one” then if you fall for that, the scam carries on from there.

Here’s a link showing the way some scammers are using “phishing” WhatsApp and Text messages to start these scams.

My son had a text similar to this last week from someone pretending to be a friend of mine telling him my phone was broken and asking if he would WhatsApp a new number which was given in the text. He knew immediately it was a scam. I would never have anything to do with WhatsApp. We need to be alert.

My mum got one of these texts a few days ago and because she'd never heard of this scam she phoned my brother. She was worried about the text but unsure what to do.

In Sandra's name we must follow the rules of lockdown and social distancing to get through this nightmare.
