I either can't fall asleep so get up and go back at about 3am or later, or fall asleep then wake about 2 and can't get back to sleep so get up and go back an hour or so later. I usually fall asleep about 4am then wake around 6..
It doesn't affect me adversely, sometimes i nod off for 20 minutes in the day, but otherwise feel fine. I just find it so frustrating lying in the darkness unable to sleep.
In desperation consulted my clinic doctor who has prescribed Zopiclone but they are still sitting in the cupboard unopened. I can't bring myself to take a 'sleeping tablet' though am on a myriad of different medications. I doubt Valerian would be suitable for me,, or any other herbal remedy.

Gad, it's as though you've channeled my sleep patterns. Some nights, regardless of what I do, meditate, listen to sleep music, I just can't fall asleep. Or I sleep for an hour, then am wide awake...repeat...

I've tried herbal supplements, but each time, they stopped working: Valerian, melatonin, chamomile. Ended up with Zoplicone and would take a quarter/half a pill just to break the pattern. Trouble is the last time I took half a pill, I ended up feeling very very dizzy, but could not fall asleep. Haven't taken one since.

I'm just glad I'm retired and can cancel plans if I need to and I don't have to drive to get groceries...whew....

Oddly what often works for me, is watching tv....

I've had problems sleeping for years, it's 4.10am and I'm still awake. I've tried valerian and camomile tea but they don't help me.

I believe I have a sleep disorder but when I spoke to a doctor about it he told me there were no sleep clinics. I don't believe that but I can't argue about it.

Maybe I should try nytol.

In Sandra's name we must follow the rules of lockdown and social distancing to get through this nightmare.

Start shutting your mind down about an hour before bed, books are fine. No other distractions like phones or television. Relax muscles, especially around the neck, jaw and head. Steady breathing, in through nose and out the mouth. Close your eyes and completely shut your mind off. (You’ll slip but just start over) Insert foam earplugs, order the house silent and hit the rack. See you in 8 hours.

I nod off quite easily these days by listening to Audiobooks ... like someone reading a bedtime story ...

I have an App on my phone and set the timer for 30 minutes but I rarely make it to the end of the timer.

If I wake up in the night I can just repeat the process ... some books work quite quickly and I never get to the end of them

Obviously consider your partner if you have one but you could both listen till you drift away and discuss how far you got next day

Many Libraries carry audiobooks via their App which you can borrow remotely, so you can listen without having to actually buy audiobooks if you want.
