3 friends incurred a bill of 30, each paid 10.

5 were returned as a discount. of this, they gave 2 as tip and from the balance 3 each got back 1.

so the total spent by the three comes to 9x3 = 27. 2 went for tip making it 29

where is the missing 1 ( 29 against the 30 originally spent )

I haven’t a clue.
My thoughts
Something to do with the bill was £27 .,including the tip. not £30 ..
3 x 9 =27.

30 minus 5 discount

27 minus (?) Discount

That is what is throwing the count off

you are on the right lines but note that:-

each one gave 10 and got back 1 I.e. each spent 9. how do you account for that

Despite the refund on the meal, they each put £10 into the kitty and when the meal was paid for and they gave a tip out of the refund, from the money left over from the discount, they each received £1 back.

The rest was their share of the £2 tip.

Bill was £30 - £5 discount = £25 + a tip of £2 = £27
27/3=9
So each person paid £9 in total (cost of meal plus tip) and each received £1 in change from the £10 they each tendered.

Step by step, one goes a long way.

there is no doubt that is correct for that is what actually happened. the question is " why does the other maths not tally " I.e.

so the total spent by the three comes to 9x3 = 27. 2 went for tip making it 29
