Australia clamps down in response to cases of UK coronavirus variant

"Australia has had mandatory hotel quarantine for passengers arriving in the country since 28 March last year, with only citizens, permanent residents and their immediate family allowed to enter, as well as people who have been in New Zealand for at least the past 14 days .
All passengers will now be required to test negative before boarding flights to Australia, and masks will be mandatory in all airports and on all international and domestic flights.

Hotel quarantine staff, including cleaners and transport workers, will be tested for covid-19 daily – they were previously tested weekly.

Other Australian states swiftly shut their borders to those who had been in the Greater Brisbane area, leaving thousands returning or moving interstate in limbo – this reporter included.

There has been broad public support for the measures: Australians across the country are keen to avoid another Melbourne-style lockdown, which was both stringent and longstanding, and are shocked by the situation in Europe and the US."

Unfortunately Boris didn't close the borders last year. Maybe things would be a lot different if he had.

The Canadian Govt being criticized a week ago over a supposed slow roll out of the vaccine. pointed to Australia as having not yet started to vaccinate ?

Vaccine program is set to begin here in late Feb.

Being that Australia is an Island at the bottom of the world It should be easy to control the virus from even getting here.
But as life dictates people are never happy with what they have and want more so they venture out and travel to the rest of the world.
The problem then is when they return and policing them is never foolproof.
But yes overall I think Australia (And New Zealand) are coping really well.
This new UK strain may well be a problem and yes it's reared it's ugly head in Brisbane.

Not sure anyone would be following the UK as we're about to put thousands of covid patients into hotels as we haven't got any space left.

NSW records zero new community cases of COVID-19 overnight
