WestJet Flight Cancelled After Dispute Over Whether Toddler Should Wear Mask -

. . . Passenger Safwan Choudhry says airline staff were trying to force his 19-month-old daughter to wear a mask even though she isn't required to at that age. But WestJet says it was his older, three-year-old daughter who was of concern. . .

. . . "WestJet would like to clarify that there were two children, and we were not requiring the infant to wear a mask, but did require the other child, who is over age two, to wear one," WestJet spokesperson Lauren Stewart said in an email . . .

. . . WestJet has a zero-tolerance mask adherence policy, the airline said, to comply with a Transport Canada regulation making it mandatory for all travellers aged two and over to wear protective face coverings while on flights . . .

. . . Choudhry said he was disappointed in the airline's response, and would like an apology . . .

. . . Stewart apologized to guests affected by the cancelled flight, and said the airline found flights for most of them.

"We are disappointed that this issue ended ultimately in a flight cancellation for all guests on board," Stewart said.

WestJet said the family was travelling on employee travel passes and said those guests are held to a higher standard of behaviour.

The airline said in the update that it would revoke those travel privileges both for the Choudhry family and the WestJet employee who provided the benefits . . .

'I was shocked,' says witness

Another passenger, Marian Nur, witnessed the entire interaction . . .

. . . "I was so shocked, the parents never raised their voices, they never got angry with the attendants, they were just trying to reason with them," she said, adding that she felt the airline's response "was just very unnecessary." . . .

They did eventually agree to the 3 year old wearing a mask, but I think by then the flight had been delayed too long and many of the passengers were very angry. There was no need for this family to not abide by the rules when they boarded the aircraft,or immediately on being asked. the younger one was crying and screaming which added to the rest of the passengers anger, that would not have happened had they done as asked.
Many people are in sympathy with the family , but I think they escalated the situation. Sad situation for ALL concerned

I believe you are right ,the parents did not help matters at all ,they seem sometimes to think they have youngsters with them , they can break rules . In many areas that is too.

Children under 11 do not need to wear masks. The stipulations are...

Babies and young children under 3 years must not wear face coverings or masks as they can lead to suffocation.

There is no requirement for any children under 11 years to wear a face mask or covering.

This was in Canada and if it is a stipulation by the airline then you are required as a passenger to abide by their rules . Its no good quoting other countries rules, and Airlines the world over have their own rules which you agree to when buying a ticket.

If the crew had been trained properly and handled the situation in the right way, no need to call the authorities - the family were not fighting or anti social in any way (according to other passengers).
Fair enough if this is the policy of the airline - but how absurd that a 3 year-old toddler not wearing a mask should result in the cancellation of a flight.

Could have been avoided imo.

Like many things in life, a bit of common sense on both sides would have seen a much better outcome for all concerned , especially the other passengers who were inconvenienced through no fault of their own.
A perfect martini should be made by filling a glass with gin, then waving it in the general direction of Italy.

Never argue with an idiot......they will drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.

Can#t believe how many are quite happy to see a 3 years old having a mask stuck over their face anywhere. Disgusting behaviour by the airline but then half the world has taken leave of its senses so no surprise at all.

If those are the rules then they should be followed, this is the problem with the possibility of further outbreaks, people think the rules don't apply to them. If those are the airline rules and you don't want to follow them then don't expect the airline to ignore you or make a special case. The mask wasn't STUCK over her face , the Parents put the mask on the child . The flight was so much delayed that it was cancelled, how much did that cost the airline because someone wouldn't obey the rules. If you want to fly , do what you are asked
