Australia says it is hopeful of having a Covid vaccine withing three to fours months. Flinders University in Adelaide has in conjunction with local company Vaxine passed first phase clinical trials of its Covax vaccine. The trials held last month were found to be safe and generated an immune response in 40 volunteer participants. Second phase trials with some 500 volunteers will be held in September.

So is Russia...or so they say.

Wait and see, I guess...

And until that day: wear a mask, practice social distancing!

Sorry to say but this is mostly PR puff and spiel. You can see the list of every vaccine currently being produced and tested here:

www.raps.org/news-and-articles/news-arti...d-19-vaccine-tracker

The Australian one you refer to is to be found way down page 2 called COVAX-19

Before any vaccine is released it has to go through Phases 2 and 3 at least and the race leaders are already heading into Phase 3 which is where 10s of 1000s of people are tested and monitored. You can see those at the top of page 1.

Given COVAX-19 is only now at the end of Phase 1 there is imo no material chance whatsoever that they will have any vaccine out by end of this year. Such claims are being made all the time by various parties and they are mostly PR pieces being done to help bolster stock market share prices or to help gain or keep funding.

There will be an increasing level of such media nonsense as time goes on with each vaccine producer desperately trying to tell the world that their vaccine is bigger, better, safer and more immediately ready and available than the others. There are HUGE amounts of profit involved in this race, many $billions of dollars. A key reason why we should not trust any of the safety data from the manufacturers themselves and instead should wait to see the results of totally independent testing by professional bodies like Cochrane.

There are over 200 vaccines being developed worldwide. The FDA will only approve a few in the end.

Nothing will be available by end of 2020 and most likely nothing for most of 2021.

When something does become available you then run into the logistics of getting a vaccine distributed and rolled out which takes more time.

Initially the vaccines (just like the PPE fiasco) will likely be limited to the people working in the heath industry. It will take some months to get it rolled out to this subset of people before everyone else gets a look in.

If the first vaccine that appears is one that uses a LIVE attenuated strain of the virus it be unlikely that the older and more vulnerable members of society will be able to have it. Scientists have apparently been warning of this but it typically has not been publicised in the news. Such vulnerable people probably already know that there is a whole raft of vaccines they can't have which contain live virus. It's too risky for them. So this demographic will have to wait for a vaccine that either contains an adjuvant or one that doesn't contain a live strain.

Final note. Worth knowing that the Australian COVAX-19 vaccine is being funded by the USA so it's probably unlikely that it will remain Australian if/when it emerges from all the testing phases.

Sure, a few months may be optimistic, but at least there is hope on the horizon with various trials showing good promise.

Go figure! The Australian govt has as yet not offered funding for the Covax trials. Yet the US, Korea and UK govts have. So any vaccine will go to citizens from those three nations before going to Australians, and we developed the vaccine. C'mon Sco Mo you know this is ultra important so surely we have some additional bucks still in the treasury coffers.

Australia's peak scientific body the CSIRO is heavily into finding a Covid-19 cure thru its Health and Biosecurity Research Group.

* CSIRO was the first research organisation outside of China to generate sufficient stock of the virus —using the virus strain isolated by the Doherty Institute — to enable pre-clinical studies and research on COVID-19.

* CSIRO successfully established a biological model in February 2020, the first in the world to confirm ferrets react to SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19). Researchers have quickly progressed to studying the course of infection in the animals – a crucial step in understanding if a vaccine will work.

* CSIRO researchers confirmed, after studying SARS CoV-2’s genomic sequence that the virus is presently changing into a number of distinct ‘clusters’ and are now starting to look at how this may also impact on the development of a vaccine.

It's great news Richie, I heard about 150 global medical researching labs are all at it too. Also, my Perth and Brisbane are likewise developing good research. Medical research seems to be something we Aussies are good at which makes me proud. Oxford is also getting good research done. Human trials with brave volunteers abound. The US too!
Some optimists say soon? Not too sure about that.

Slightly off topic, but I heard many labs are being hacked for their research. The usual culprits.

But will a vaccine be a one off like TB or must we get it REGULARLY due to its mutating nature? That worries me if it's true?

why does that worry you?

I expect it will be a regular vaccine, like flu vaccine.

In fact I anticipate it will eventually be incorporated into flu vaccine.

Like swine flu - first came out as a monovalent vaccine - now it past of annual flu vaccine.

How true is that Dan and the CSIRO appears to be at the centre of it. They produced the world’s first successful influenza drug, Relenza and had a hand in the 2009 Swine Flu vaccine development as well as the 2013 Avian flu.
Tho not medical its most famous achievement was giving the world WiFi.
