My beef is most USA TV stations do not carry sub tittles. when a big film comes on late at night - I cant hear it - as I
have a neighbour who works - beneath me. - Other stations in the UK & others exspect you to read sub tittles - too
fast - Give you seconds - to read - a nine second line.- one channel `Drama` leaves out several lines all together.
End of Rant

Good side and bad side of sub-titles. Watching a movie to busy reading the sub-titles and miss the movie. I can not hear/understand some people voices and wife gets upset when the TV is to loud. so if i can't understand what a person is saying i turn the sub-titles on.

I fairly certain it’s an option with settings on newer televisions. I keep them on permanently.

I can understand why you want to have a rant, Man of Kent - these things can be very irritating.

I often have to resort to switching on the subtitles option on my TV to follow dialogue which is muffled, mumbled, heavily accented or not clearly enunciated - and I agree that reading the subtitles can sometimes distract my attention from the screen images so I miss important bits of a film / movie.

I recently discovered I have a setting on my TV called “Clear Voice” - if you switch this setting on it does emphasise the dialogue over background sounds and provides clearer speech in movies and shows.
I find this quite helpful but I still have to switch on the subtitles sometimes too.

My neighbor and best friend is German, also having dogs trained in multiple languages has her/me watching many movies in German language so some time back I decided to try to learn it, I also change the CC to German on many movies/shows, being around my German uncle as much as I was growing up also helped me much.

What is the difference between captions and subtitles?
Closed Captioning vs Subtitles

Some people refer to closed captions and subtitles interchangeably, but there’s an important distinction.

Both closed captions and subtitles are the text version of the spoken audio in a video or Movie, However, while subtitles involve translating the video’s language into an alternate language, closed captions are in the same language as the audio.

Closed captions are created to allow deaf and hard-of-hearing people to experience the video, so they include background sounds and speaker changes. Subtitles assume the viewer hears the audio and as a result do not contain the background sounds or notifications for speaker changes.
Subtitles and captions have different goals!

Subtitles allow people to watch videos even when they themsleves don’t speak the language. With the growth of global video platforms, many video owners see the value of adding subtitles making their content available in multiple languages.

The growth of closed captions has coincided with the growth of mobile video consumption as more people watch videos in public places with the sound muted.
