Man & Bird

Now here bin Porthleven something unusual
Here on the Harbour Wall
Sits the newly sculpted Man & Bird
Un-veiled by Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall
He actually sits on a W W 2 pill-box
With the Bird standing by his side
As though waiting for the Fishing Fleet
Coming in with each rising Tide
The Sculptor was Holly Bendall
Her idea came from her Cadgwith sketch
Where she pictured a man and bird sitting there
As though waiting for what the Fishermen would fetch
Holly hoped that her creation
Would highlight the life of small boat fishing
And the manner in which their work is done
A hard life without any doubt
Often passed from Father to Son
The funds were raised by 80 people
In a minimal 28 days
The people at the unveiling
Also helped in many ways
In real life the subject was Dave Rogers
Who caught the Sculptor’s eye
And the story you’ve just been reading
Tells you the reason why
