Painting by Colin Perry

Eastbourne Pier
We’re visiting a venue in Sussex
And sitting on the pebbled beach
Eyes focussed on the East now
Where Eastbourne Pier is within easy reach
In the 1870’’s the pier was designed
Eugenie Birch was designers name
And he deigned 14 all told
And that ws his claim to fame
It was opened in 1870
By the landowner of that time
Lord Cavendish became Duke of Devonshire
Who financed this facility sublime
The area has lots of History
Of Roman times and before
And even built a large convalescent home
For the injured victims of First World War
Not far away a set of high white chalk cliffs
A treat to visit I’ve heard said
These tall magnificent features
Known as Beachy Head
There are some more reminders of War
Not very far away
Originally built as a seaward defence
Martello towers at Pevensey Bay
But I’ve only assembled history with words
Although in a bit of a rush
But it’s to compliment the work of the Artist
With his Easel, Pastels , Palette and Brush

It is one of my regrets that I have never been to Eastbourne.
