The Artist and the Poet

It crossed my mind not a minute ago
On something I’d previously said
To a certain young lady in the U S of A
When Christmas was some weeks ahead
I promised to write something special
Instead of sending a gift
For words I have in abundance
Which I write down and juggle and shift
Thoughts written down as they pass in your mind
In no particular order
Then edit and amend as you may wish
Perhaps centralise from border to border
Choosing your words to emphasise
The strong points you’re trying to make
Creating an image & leaving no doubt
Avoiding the slightest mistake
For the mind of a poet is similar to an artist
With a huge vocabulary from which to choose
Whereas the Artist with Palette and brushes
Oils, Acrylics and water colours they may use
Soft words create an idyllic scene
Where pastels an Artist may select
Adding white or grey perhaps for relief
As the foreground they are ready to project
Then equally the bard will broaden the scene
According to what they may wish to convey
Lilac and Jonquil and a soft eau de nil for tranquillity
Matching words that these colours may portray
Anger may be displayed by Black Grey and Vibrants
Strong words must be used for their match
In an effort to create an impressive image
Hoping the viewer’s interest it will catch
One is an Artist the other a Wordsmith
Both with a singular aim
Hoping to project their thoughts to a viewer or reader
One could say that’s the name of the game
