I seem to have a virus in my computer and thinking of doing a factory reset, I have done this many years ago but now have some programs I would like to save as have paid money for them.
The question is, I have a spare 500 GB USB drive to save on but would like to save with data, then there is my book program and chapters, what is the best way to save?
Or how about a good virus checker?
Any suggestions are welcome, running Windows 7.

As you know Windows 7 is now obsolete
If the virus is embedded,a factory reset will not remove it, Run your virus program (You do have one don`t you?)

If you know the date when you suspected a virus, do a system restore before that date.

Download Malwarebytes free just ignore all buy now or Activate messages and install then run. When is finished click Quarantine..DONE!

Malwarebytes here

The advice already given is best. Try and clear whatever virus has got into your computer. Resetting may not be enough but I wonder about another factor too. If reset, will the OS need activating again? Maybe, maybe not. If it did, I don't know that it's possible to activate Windows 7 now and some sort of 'hack' might be needed to run the OS. A bit beyond the scope of the ordinary user.

Do you have a backup of all of your personal files stored on a disk away from the computer so that they can never get infected? If not, this could be done now but once you get the computer virus-tree and are very sure it has gone, scan the stored files with a couple of anti-malware programs to make sure they are clean. If personally created files are not backed up, permanent loss is always a risk.

I know other people still run Windows 7. There are even computer hobbyists who run XP, Windows 98 and 95. I think though, that if you just want to use a reliable computer, it is better to upgrade it every now and then to a newer one with better hardware and an operating system supported by Microsoft with monthly updates.

Some programs that work with Windows 7 may not work on a later operating system. An unfortunate effect of upgrading that happens sometimes. Newer operating systems have a 'Compatibility Mode' that will often overcome these problems however. Do you still have the installation files and key numbers for the paid programs?

Well it looks as it is all working so far, I do use a second computer that has Windows 11, and if necessary have used this one, thanks for all the suggestions.
