The European Union remains the largest market for U.S. vintners with $469 million in sales last year, a 15% drop largely because of a strong dollar. It was followed by Canada with $448 million in sales, up 1%.

The trade group said a strong U.S. dollar and foreign subsidies also played a role in the export decrease. The wine sales to China were particularly striking because there was nearly a 25% decrease in value of American wines sold there last year as a result of retaliatory tariffs imposed by Beijing in response to the Trump administration imposing higher taxes for Chinese steel and other products.

Why shouldn't tariffs go both ways? There's bound to be rabbit holes...from tariffs to NASA, indeed you've travelled light years from one topic to next..!

How California wine sales are being hurt by trade war with China

What effect is the trade war with China having on California wine sales? It’s not good. But for at least one Paso Robles grower, the pain just might be worth it.

The Chinese government announced that it would be increasing the tariff on U.S. wines in response to the ongoing trade dispute with the U.S. For sure, the increase is good news for American competitors.

Effective June 1, China will add another 15% tariff on U.S. wine imports to their country. That takes the total tax and tariff on U.S. wines shipped to China to 91% since they ratcheted up several times starting in April 2018.

“This is the third Chinese tariff increase on U.S. wine in the past 14 months, and with each additional round, it becomes more and more difficult to compete in the fastest-growing wine market in the world,” said Robert P. “Bobby” Koch, President and CEO of California-based Wine Institute.

Sales of U.S. wine to China were already off 25% in 2018. Most of those bottles were from California, according to the Wine Institute.

Trump is like a child who has been given a new toy. He discovered tariffs and now he will play with them until he grows bored with the subject.

...and his followers obviously have no clue what the word ´tariffs´ means...

trumps repeated message is that Americans shouldn’t worry about the economic impact of his tariffs, couching his claim by saying it's "mostly," "really," "largely" or "ultimately" paid for by China. Despite the hedging words he uses, experts told us the president is wrong to offer that sort of assurance.

Economists told us that real-world examples of tariffs working as intended are rare, and consumers of the tariff-levying country are the primary victims of tariffs, by having to pay higher prices.

The federal treasury does get paid when tariffs are levied. But Chinese exporters don’t make the payment. The importers do — usually U.S. companies.

One recent study by economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Princeton University, and Columbia University concluded that "the full incidence of the tariff falls on domestic consumers, with a reduction in U.S. real income of $1.4 billion per month by the end of 2018."

Trump said that tariffs are "paid for mostly by China, by the way, not by us."

China doesn’t pay the initial tariffs — U.S. importers do.

I’m afraid this thread has completely lost me ... it started off with Trump’s comments on tariffs levied by the French on US wines ... but now seems to have veered to tariffs between US and China ...

What’s this thread about? ... is it about EU / US tariffs or is it about US/ China tariffs ... or is it just yet another boring Trump bashing exercise?

When it comes to wine production and France it needs to be kept in mind that France is tied to the EU so any tariff applied to its exports of wine would have to be a EU wide tariff as would the return volley.

At the moment France competes with Italy to be the top wine producer, however the varieties and styles of wine they produce are significantly different different as any lover of wine will tell you, as are the styles of the number 3 producer Spain. In fact of the top 10 global producers 5 are within the EU, the US, Australia and South Africa, Argentina and Chile being the exceptions. A large proportion of the US wine is consumed domestically but what it exports mostly goes to the EU where the competition is on quality rather than price.

Globally the non EU producers are ranked US number 4, Argentina, number 5, Australia number 6, SA number 8.Chile number 9.

China is considered the fastest growing wine producer and would be ranked 8 if it was included in global statistics, but there is no official confidence in its reporting at this time so it tends to be omited by the global bodies and because it has next to zero exports.

These trade war has been going on since 2005 between Boeing and eu plane producer. Ya, all trumps fault? When he wasn't even president. For up dates on airplane manufactures dispute we can best find information on wine manufacture web sites. I like working off information from peoples blogs because they share all the inside information.

Australian Wines are just as good and don't get tarriffed much in the US (I think ), a much wiser choice if you're not happy with expensive French wines .
