Most people would agree World war II was a just war.

World War I was not a just war. It was an Imperial Bloodbath.
Mass slaughter brought about by imperial powers locked in a deadly struggle to capture new territories, resources and markets.

Empire in all its guises , along with the militarism and national chauvinism lead to bloodshed and slaughter.

Wear your poppy with pride. Think of the fallen on the battle fields and all the victims of war and conflict everywhere.
Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

They are the words of George Santayana, Spanish and American philosopher, essayist , novelist and poet . Apt for the current situation in Europe.

Interestingly "For the Fallen" (13–16) "They shall grow not old ... We will remember them" was specifically composed in honour of the casualties of the BEF, written immediately following the retreat from the Battle of Mons and first published in the Times on 21 September 1914. So early in that war yet nobody said this is madness let us seek a truce now. Europe was too caught up in the excitement, patriotism the fervour of war and Empire. There was absolutely no reason for Russia, Germany, France, Britain the USA or any of the Empire countries to enter the first WW yet they came in their millions. Firstly volunteers naively went off in search of fun, adventure and glory and then conscripts were forced to go. They all found out that reality of war was not the same as the boyhood stories. Europe was plunged into chaos. Empires were destroyed. A world wide pandemic. An economic depression. The war to end all wars instead then led directly to the next even more devestaing war a mere two decades later. Why did the world not learn from history between 1918 and 1939? Britain so terrible devastated by 1918 decided to send an unprepared army to Europe and were easily over run by the Germans. The Russians turned the tide of the war and eventually the USA late entry helped end the war. Then immediately the USA and Russia entered into a 45 year cold war. Ironically the "defeated" Germans and Japanese became super powers. Britain one of the "victors" slid into steep economic decline for 70 years and only emerged in the mid 1990's. Armistace day, Poppies, the last post etc evolved because nations could not at the time and indeed still today found it too hard to face the fact that all the suffering of WW/1 actually was in vain and even worse was totally avoidable.
