Everyone is entitled to live their own lives as they see fit, as least women who want abortion can have it done safely and legally, people who are in a same sex relationship, can if they choose to marry, and rightly so.Same sex couples deserve happiness just like everyone else.

It's about time they came into alignment with the rest of the UK, it means they no longer have to keep it hidden in the back streets.

I am a christian and people making their own choices is acceptable to me.

Not sure what makes you think most Northern Irelanders will disagree with these changes

Certainly in Republic of Ireland that was not the case - the change to legalise same sex marriage came about after a referendum showed majority in favour.

as it did here in Australia, btw.

I think you’ll find that the majority of people in NI are in favour of same-sex marriage - the NI polls say so and the last time the NI Assembly debated a motion for it, there was a slim majority vote in the Assembly in favour of it - it was the DUP who blocked it by a petition of concern, which allowed a minority of the Assembly to overturn the majority vote.
Sinn Fein planned to re-introduce this legislation but the Assembly hasn’t been sitting since then.

Also, polls from last year show that the majority of NI people are in favour of de-criminalising abortion.
A recent poll showed a slim majority are against the abortion legislation which Westminster Parliament is imposing on NI, to bring them into line with rest of UK. However, if their own NI Assembly got their act together and started fulfilling their role again, they would be able to introduce their own legislation, with the kind of limits which NI citizens would find more acceptable, such as the 12 week limit that applies in the Republic of Ireland.

The only reason that Westminster has had to impose this legislation on them is because their own elected representatives are unable to work together and there has been no functioning Assembly for nearly 3 years to use the devolved powers they have to set their own laws in these matters.

Religion usually stands in the way of any reform.

Well, there are ligitimate criticisms obviously, but when you say religion stands in the way of ANY reform, there has to be a few weaknesses with that argument (like how did ANY reform get done over the millenia there have been religions?).

It is worth remembering the words "Grant unto Caesar that which is Caesars, grant unto God that which if Gods". smile.png .
