Generally speaking, the mailmen of parcel deliveries aren't left by the door either next door or in the hut shed in the back garden

Yes, it happened to me recently.
I was waiting in for the delivery of two pairs of specialist trainers . I have no door bell and visitors / delivery people use the door -knocker. I had a text message from a delivery firm saying my packages had been delivered at a specific time, but I hadn't received them. On further investigation I was told that the they had been left on the doorstep as I hadn't answered when the door was knocked. The conclusion was the packages had been stolen. My elderly neighbours have made it clear they will not take in parcels for other people.

Usually, if you are not at home, the delivery driver may ask a neighbour if they would be kind enough to take a parcel in for their neighbours,

I had a huge xmas hamper delivered to a friend in London a few years back with Champagne, home made chocolate truffles, goose liver and all kinds of delicacies, xmas cakes, freshly baked christmas cookies etc... the delivery company said it was delivered!

But my friend was actually on holiday for a week and, 2 weeks later, he still hadn't received it only , I claimed with the company who said it had been left at a neighbour so I sent my friend knocking at the neighnour's door and there it was! It had stayed there for 3 weeks I wonder what would have happened if he never knocked.

Here, If courier delivers to a neighbour,he puts a card through the door of the address the parcel is for, telling them, there parcel is at neighbour address.

I've never had a problem with packages in U.K.
Royal Mail parcels are never left on the doorstep - if there's nobody at home to take delivery of them, the postman always leaves a card advising me I can collect parcel from the postal sorting office or I can telephone to re-arrange a delivery day.

Parcels delivered by courier usually have to be signed for, so are often left with a neighbour if I'm out.
I occasionally find parcels left in discreetly sheltered places at the back of my house if the courier doesn't need a signature on delivery but they always pop a note through the door to let me know where they've left the parcel.
The Royal Mail postman used to do this too - I found it much more convenient than having to collect it or re-arrange delivery, but I suppose they've stopped doing it because of thieves.

Somebody once sent me a pair of potted standard bay trees as a surprise gift.
Although they were fully encased in plastic wrapping, it was obvious they were plants, so when the delivery driver couldn't get an answer from my house, he knocked on my neighbour's door. She told him I was away but wasn't sure when I'd be back. As it was a hot summer, the delivery driver was reluctant to leave them outside my house, so my neighbour offered to make sure they were kept watered and the delivery driver took the pots round to the back of my house, removed the plastic wrappings and left the pots in a shady spot on the patio near the water tap.
Full marks to that delivery driver for excellent service - I was very grateful he hadn't just left the plants without making sure someone would look after them and grateful to my neighbour for keeping them watered - as I was away for 3 more weeks and I doubt the plants would have survived that long if he'd just left them wrapped up without water.

In my former neighborhood, one resident had his outdoor Christmas decorations stolen. He placed a sign in the yard notifying passersby of that fact and signed it "Bah Humbug".
