They refused to make a cake bearing a pro-gay slogan. I feel it is their right to do so. How do others feel about this?

Common sense prevails at last!

It has been judgements such as this that have fuelled Brexit and a move to the right in society right across the EU. Either extreme cannot be good for social harmony.

It opens the door to refusal of anybody purely for ideological / philosophical reasons B) As I have said many times on when this subject has come up, you're in business to make money, and whom so ever shall seek your services, you are obliged to provide the very best service possible, or you should get out of business B) I am not interested in doing business with anyone who discriminates against others B)

That must have been a very expensive cake. I wonder who actually footed the legal fees as the involved lawyers probably laughed all the way to the bank?

Any other businesses I can understand serving anyone, cuz you're not going to be asking questions as to their sexual orientation, or any other personal values. A cake has to be made to order and symbolized personally with a special "insignia" specifically dealing with their sexual orientation. The business owners
had to "engage" the couple and compromise their own personal convictions. They decided against it.
Their business...their right. Common sense did prevail here..at last!

It needs to be made clear that the appeal succeeded only because of the political message on the cake, not that the customers was gay. The court held that nobody could be force to utter or display a political message in which they did not believe. Had the cake been a plain cake or a cake without an obviously political message, decorated with flowers or unicorns for instance, service to a gay person could not be refused. So this was a very narrow ruling that I suspect was not what the appellants had intended the outcome to be, they must still provide service to gay people, and anyone else, who request ordinary goods.

Way before any of this nonsense started we did have and still have this notice in our shop "No cheques" and another one which says "We reserve the right to refuse to serve anyone"
This is an old news the pair decided to deliberately provoke an issue and left wing paid them to take it to the highest court in land the right wing defended it to the end and the right won on technicality as the left had been derogatory but did not win on merit. That means that if it happens again it can go again to the high court....but no fear now there is common sense in the high court

As Kaygee pointed out, no, they don't have the right to refuse to serve anyone - discrimination by refusing to serve a gay person would still be illegal.
So if they did that and it went to the high court, it wouldn't be the same ,morganman.

The latest fashion is to find something to be aggrieved about.
