Probably the most well known person I’ve met would be Prince Harry.
My step-son is a keen cyclist so when the Tour de France was being held in Yorkshire, he came over to stay with me and we travelled to some of the race stages. It was quite a big event around here and us Yorkshire folk threw ourselves into the spirit of it and welcomed all the cyclists as they passed through our villages.
My step-son and I were in the nearby village of West Tanfield on the day the Prince Harry and the Cambridges visited the village, after starting off the race from Harewood House. We were there for the Cyclists and didn’t know the Royal Party were going to be dropping in.
My step-son served in Afghanistan with Harry - he used to look after the communication equipment in the helicopters, so they were acquainted through their military duties. As they look very much alike, with very similar build, facial features and colouring and the same gingery hair, they were sometimes nick-named “the ginger twins” - they look uncannily alike, especially when in uniform.
I guess that is why Harry recognised my step-son and stopped to speak to us - their chat was mostly reminiscing about the team they worked with, but Harry politely included me in the conversation.
Prince William and Catherine were there too, but they just smiled as they passed us, so I wouldn’t claim to have met them.
William Hague used to be a regular supporter of the local charity I work as Treasurer for, so we had many meetings and charity dinners together over the years.
- and since Rishi Sunak became our MP, he supports our charity, so I have met him a few times.
He seems a nice chap.
