Why do the police turn a blind eye to illegal numbers ?
There are lots of illegal numbers around the area I live it's a straight forward 1k fine.
People move letters or numbers so they say a name or something like E11GH X when the legal plate should read E11 GHX.
It seems some motoring offences are just ignored by our police and that's be honest these people who drive cars with personalised number plates can afford the fine but might not like the points on their licence !!

I just read this so it is down to the Police to sort it ....... DVLA does not accept reports of illegal number plates from the public. Give the police a call ask why they are not doing it.

How do you know it was not issued that way? Your first post assumed a space was in original plate.

As part of Operation Dragon, ANPR officers will be stopping vehicles with number plates that:

* Display adjusted fixings or bolts which alter spaces or obscure characters to appear as something else.

* Use any font that is not the standard DVLA approved “Charles Wright” font

* Use offensive wording

* Are not easily readable or recognised by the naked eye

Number plates should also be made from a reflective material

Front number plates must display black characters on a white background and rear plates must display black characters on a yellow background.

Operation Dragon is a collaboration between forces in Dorset, Bournmouth, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk, and will clamp down on motorists displaying non-standardised registration plates.

Really???

As long as the plates are clearly readable and registered to the vehicle they are displayed on , does it really matter if the letters and numbers have been moved closer together?

Think the police have more important problems to deal with.

Yes it matters and it's illegal.

The penalty for driving a car with an illegal number plate is a fine of up to £1,000, plus an automatic MOT fail.

Didn't say it wasn't illegal Pats

Just don't think it features very high on the priority list for the police, and in my opinion that is correct, there are far more important matters that need addressing.

Not sure how it works over there. But this topic makes it sound like people can make their own plates - or maybe even expected to. Is this right? Ours are issued and expected to go on unaltered.
